4G LTE Network Displays Big League Speed, Power for Baseball Fans in Spring Training Cities Across Florida

TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As Major League ballplayers work out during Spring Training, baseball fans across Florida also will experience the latest display of speed and power from the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network in numerous Grapefruit League ballparks.

Verizon launched 4G LTE across Florida in December 2010 and already covers about 75 percent of the state's population, including these Grapefruit League venues:

  • McKechnie Field in Bradenton (Pirates)
  • Bright House Networks Field in Clearwater (Phillies)
  • Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin (Blue Jays)
  • Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers (Red Sox)
  • Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee (Astros)
  • Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers (Twins)
  • Champion Stadium in Lake Buena Vista (Braves)
  • Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland (Tigers)
  • Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota (Orioles)
  • George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa (Yankees)

Verizon Wireless plans to cover its entire network footprint with 4G LTE by the end of 2013.

For baseball fans, 4G LTE means streaming their favorite team's stats, highlights and other sports programming, or downloading full-length classic baseball movies in HD with no annoying buffering. Sports gamers can take part in multiplayer online action, and fantasy league players can upload photos and posts almost instantly.

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

"If you appreciate speed and power, you'll be a fan of 4G LTE," said Pam Tope, Florida Region President for Verizon Wireless.  "We're proud to offer this advanced experience for visiting and local Grapefruit League fans, and to our customers across the state."

Other Verizon Wireless network enhancements since last year's Spring Training season include new 4G LTE and 3G cell sites in various Grapefruit League cities, new in-building systems at Spring Training area hotels and other public locations, and the ongoing testing of the network by a team of "real-life test men."  This team drives thousands of miles on roads in Florida in special vehicles to thoroughly test the company's network and help ensure it outperforms other wireless networks.

Major markets including South Florida, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Orlando were the first in Florida to launch the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network just 16 months ago. Since then, the company has been enhancing coverage in those areas and expanding service to others including Gainesville, Tallahassee, Daytona Beach, Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakeland, Fort Myers and Pensacola.

When customers travel outside of 4G LTE coverage areas, devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast.  Verizon Wireless' 3G network is the most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their area or when they travel to areas already covered by 4G LTE.
