Muharraq's "Pearling Trail" Becomes Second Bahraini Landmark on UNESCO World Heritage List
MANAMA, Bahrain, July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The legacy of Bahrain's pearl diving industry was honored on Saturday when the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee named the historic "Pearling Trail" to its list of World Heritage sites during a meeting in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.
The 3.5 kilometer trail consists of 17 buildings in Muharraq city, three offshore oyster beds, parts of the seashore, and the Qal'at Bu Mahir fortress on the southern trip of Muharraq Island.
Experts predict that the designation will enhance tourism, increase foreign direct investment, and lead to additional cultural exchanges between the countries of the Arabian Gulf.
The "Pearling Trail" is Bahrain's second recognized World Heritage Site. The Bahrain Fort was listed as such in 2007.
