SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- CRUZ Tequila's award-winning leadership sets the record straight and dispels seven tequila myths before Cinco de Mayo arrives:

Myth No. 1: Mexico is the No. 1 tequila consuming country.
False: The United States now consumes more tequila than Mexico, by purchasing over 80% of all exported tequila which equate to 108 million liters per year.

Myth No. 2: Tequilas are made all over the globe.
False: Tequila, much like champagne, can only be made in parts of 5 Mexican states under the authority of the Board of Directors of the Tequila Regulatory Council (e.g., CRT/Consejo Regulador del Tequila, A.C.). Otherwise the spirit cannot be called tequila.

Myth No. 3: Tequila has a worm in the bottle.
False: While there are some novelty brands of mezcal that may feature, worms, scorpions or other insects - quality tequilas contain 100% agave, and nothing else.

Myth No. 4: Tequila is made from cactus.
False: Tequila can only be made from the Blue Weber Agave plant, which is not actually a cactus, but rather a succulent.

Myth No. 5: Tequila needs salt and lime.
False: Salt and lime, are often served with tequila shots, however good quality, 100% agave tequila, can be sipped straight. Lime and salt, in particular, can overwhelm your palate, and hide the bad flavors associated with inferior mixto tequilas. Mixto tequilas are varieties which are only 51% agave, and made using inexpensive sugar-based filler alcohols.

Myth No. 6: The margarita is the No. 1 cocktail in Mexico.
False: While the margarita is the most popular cocktail in the United States (e.g., on average 185,000 margaritas per hour according to Brown-Forman, 2008), the Paloma is more popular in Mexico. A Paloma is made with tequila and grapefruit flavored soda (similar to Squirt), often served on the rocks and garnished with a lime.

Myth No. 7: Tequila does not mix well.
False: High quality, ultra premium tequila's are a great base for a variety of cocktails beyond the simple margarita. Top mixologists are using tequila creatively in hundreds of new ways, and some interesting recipes can be found here
