Jamcast Introduces API
DLNA media server software becomes an extensible digital content delivery platform for the consumer's living room.
ORLANDO, Fla., May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Software Development Solutions, Inc. introduced today its API for Jamcast, a DLNA streaming media server for Windows PC's. The announcement coincides with the release of Jamcast version 1.8 and the publication of several open source plugin projects.
The Jamcast API enables rapid development of plugins that deliver media streams and browsable metadata to network media players and other DLNA devices. Possible plugin applications could range from sharing an internet radio station to integrations with large digital music services and audio hardware. Once a plugin has been installed, a consumer can browse and stream its content to compatible devices around the home and beyond.
"It's an exciting time given the prevalence of cloud-based music services with their own public interfaces," said Scott Streaker, President and CEO of Software Development Solutions, Inc. "The Jamcast API simplifies the direct distribution of these services to millions of network-connected consumer devices."
Also released today is the source code for several Jamcast plugins. Hosted by Microsoft's CodePlex open source repository, these projects are now available to the developer community under the New BSD License to both learn from and contribute to.
The projects published include Pearl Jam Radio, an example of a simple plugin for a single internet radio station, and a CD Audio plugin that enables streaming playback from a CD drive attached to the PC. Also published is the Spotify plugin project, an extensive integration with the popular unlimited music streaming service utilizing their libspotify API.
Additionally, a new developer web page has been launched providing API documentation, links to the open source plugin projects, and more at http://getjamcast.com/api.
Jamcast streams digital media to gaming consoles, HDTV's, home theater equipment, mobile devices, and other consumer electronics using DLNA and UPnP technologies. Jamcast is easy to install and runs on Windows XP or higher. A free and fully-functional 14-day trial can be downloaded at http://getjamcast.com.
