Wake Up and Save the Birds
Learn why the only coffee you should ever drink needs to be 'Bird Friendly®' certified
BOSTON, May 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Coffee is an integral part of our everyday lives. However most coffee drinkers do not even realize that there are environmental consequences in every cup. Demand a better cup of coffee. Learn today why you should only drink independently certified Smithsonian Bird Friendly® coffee if you want to help keep the Latin American habitat our migratory bird species need to survive.
Why does Bird Friendly Certified Matter?
A constantly increasing majority of the coffee Americans drink is grown on Latin American sun coffee farms, eco-deserts. These farms are built by destroying what was beautiful tropical habitat. These tropical forests were home to many species of birds and plants and, in particular, the winter refuge for over 100 of our North American migratory bird species. Beautiful birds like Scarlet Tanager, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Baltimore Oriole, and the Wood Thrush. When these birds migrate south during our winter they are increasingly finding survival difficult because of sun-coffee farms. Populations are dropping – one spring they might not come back. This is why the only coffee we should drink should be shade grown, organic coffee with the Bird Friendly® certification on the bag.
The Smithsonian began rigorously inspecting shade farms in Latin America twenty years ago to ensure they met with scientific standards that would allow our migratory bird species to thrive. We should all be drinking and talking about Smithsonian certified Bird Friendly® coffee.

About Birds & Beans
In 2008 Scott Weidensaul and Bill Wilson launched Birds & Beans® coffee in the US to make it easy for coffee drinkers to buy Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center certified 'Bird Friendly®' coffee. Kenn Kaufman and Dr. Bridget Stutchbury joined in the mission. Birds & Beans sales have doubled year-on-year since the launch. Partners at Birds & Beans in Canada, Madeleine Pengelley and David Pritchard, launched their business in 2002.
Every bean sold by Birds & Beans comes from Direct Trade or Fair-Trade farms like Gaia and is certified by independent inspectors to meet the rigorous Smithsonian standards. This is a certification based on decades of objective scientific research. Bird Friendly® coffee means that migratory songbirds we know and love have a better chance to survive while on their wintering grounds in the tropics. Tropical habitat destruction is today's biggest threat to neo-tropical migrants. Today, almost all coffee on the shelves in the US does not meet 'Bird Friendly®' standards. The independent 'Bird Friendly®' certification means coffee comes from a farm that provides rich winter habitat – almost as good as virgin forest – for the over 100 bird species we know and love in our spring and summer. And these farms are USDA Organic certified and all family owned with good jobs for skilled rural workers.
