Eurail Group Reports Positive InterRail Sales Results for 2011

UTRECHT, The Netherlands, February 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Eurail Group G.I.E., the organisation dedicated to the marketing and management of the InterRail Pass, reports positive full year sales results for the fifth year running. Over 248,000 Europeans explored Europe by rail and enjoyed travelling with InterRail Passes in 2011.

Compared to 2010, month-on-month sales followed a similar pattern to that of 2010, but April and May especially were very positive sales months with 11% and 14% growth respectively. While traditionally sold via the European railways, online sales of InterRail Passes have really taken off in the past years and already amount to 25% of the total sales.

The InterRail Global Pass, valid for travel in 30 European countries, remains the most popular option among youth travellers under the 26 years old. Flexible travel is in high demand and the 5 travel days within 22 days InterRail Global Pass remains the most popular product for travellers not wishing to spend everyday of their vacation travelling.

The InterRail One Country Pass, also saw a significant increase of 5.5% in sales. Italy and Germany remain the most popular destinations for travelling with a InterRail One Country Pass with a combined market share of 62%. Travellers purchasing such a pass are interested in visiting one particular country in depth.

"The Eurail Group G.I.E. is encouraged to see continued growth for InterRail Passes, despite the challenging current European economic climate", said Mr. René de Groot, Managing Director of the Eurail Group. "Whilst growth remained modest for the InterRail Global Pass, we still welcomed an additional 5.000 passengers last year. This reconfirms that InterRail Passes are still an excellent way to explore Europe. We are therefore confident that InterRail sales will continue to grow in the years to come as more and more Europeans discover the real value for money this pass represents", continued de Groot.
