Brain Mapping Shows Signs of Improvement in Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Neuropsychologist uses non-invasive brain mapping to help children stay focused
CHICAGO, May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Teachers are often the number one source of information for parents. "We are trained to observe issues that prevent learning," says Claudia Trzeciak, a 17-year veteran at Liberty Elementary School. "When you have 25-26 kids in a classroom and you give a direction and you have someone who cannot focus, this is something teachers usually see before parents do." This is the case in her classroom where Billy, a bright and energetic fourth grade student was diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD. Usually, however, this is only a guess.
Neuroscientists can take the guesswork out of brain diagnoses through more advanced testing. Dr. Kyle Bonesteel, Director of NeuroHealth Associates, is able to actually see through non-invasive images of the brain, what patterns the brain is producing and whether this matches an ADD/ADHD pattern. This allows him to identify a problem. Without knowledge of exactly what the problem is, many kids are taking medications for ADHD and ADD that have them suffering side effects such as sleepless nights or lack of appetite. "Many parents say they see a behavioral change while on medication but that they do not like having a medication control them, and many suffer from side effects," says Bonesteel.
William Strand, Billy's father, says that neurofeedback helped his son tremendously. "My nine year olds grades have gone from C's and D's to low A's and A+'s across the board."
Dr. Bonesteel helps thousands of children each year, and says, "Neurofeedback provides a scientific analysis of brain functioning that lends itself to the most effective treatment strategy."
The process is completely harmless, can be combined with other therapies, and is very enjoyable for children. It's advanced neuroscience applied in a fun way for children.
"We have seen significant improvements in 75-80 percent of children with ADD and ADHD issues and, for most of our patients, the positive results are nicely sustained over time," and many teachers, including Trzeciak, agree "It's great to have a baseline. Brain scans are amazing, for determining how healthy your brain is."
