Z Trim Holdings Wins IFT's "Making Healthy School Meals Easy" Challenge
The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), in partnership with the American Culinary Federation (ACF), developed this competition to raise awareness about school nutrition and increase the accessibility of healthy foods throughout the country. The winners were announced during the 2012 IFT Annual Meeting & Food Expo in Las Vegas.
MUNDELEIN, Ill., July 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Z Trim Holdings, Inc. (OTC: ZTHO), an agricultural ingredient technology company and producer of cutting-edge functional ingredients, won the IFT's inaugural "Making Healthy School Meals Easy" Challenge with its Smokin' Powerhouse Chili recipe. See the following link: http://www.ift.org/Newsroom/News-Releases/2012/June/28/Making-Healthy-School-Meals-Easy-Challenge.aspx.
Z Trim, and the other competitors, were required to convert a recipe from the 2011 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Recipes for Healthy Kids competition into a manufactured product for widespread distribution and use in school cafeterias. The products were judged on nutritional content, flavor, cost and feasibility of application in a cafeteria setting. Notable Judges included Kit Kiefer from the Research Chef's Association and Schwan's Food Service and Executive Chef Charles Wilson from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas as well as school food service representatives, food scientists, and high school culinary students, including Junior Iron Chef Competition Winners.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to show how Z Trim Ingredients can help make healthier the foods that children already like to eat," said Lynda Caroll, Z Trim's VP of Sales and Applications. "Incorporating Z Trim in the recipe not only produced a great-tasting chili, but also reduced the calorie count enough that we could add a sour cream topping, which helped put our entry over the top." Caroll went on, "The exposure from winning this contest will help us show the food industry and school officials that, by using Z Trim ingredients, children don't have to sacrifice great taste to get better nutrition."
Kit Kiefer, who judged the contest and serves as Director of Culinary Services for Schwan's, commented, "As a leading supplier to the school food service industry, we are constantly focusing on healthy options for kids. In fact we have a tremendous focus on health and wellness throughout our business. Judging this competition certainly helped me understand how important ingredient choices are when developing healthy products that kids and consumers in general enjoy. Ingredients like Z-Trim allow us to maintain the high level of integrity and quality we are known for while providing a cleaner label and a healthier product. The 1st place "Smokin Powerhouse Chili" was a standout. It packed a flavorful punch while delivering vibrant flavors loaded with nutrients. This truly is defining the future of food."
