Over 40 kayakers helped raise $18,000 for the American Cancer Society

MIAMI, June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- ArmourLite Watches (www.armourlite.com) was a proud sponsor of the 12th annual Kayak Against Cancer event on Fort Lauderdale beach presented by the Kayuba Dive Club and the American Cancer Society. The event took place on Saturday, June 16 and helped raise over $18,000 for the American Cancer Society. Over 40 kayakers took part in the race, which was comprised of a 7-mile course and an 11-mile course in the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean conditions were quite rough for this year's race with heavy winds only making matters worse.

ArmourLite's founder and CEO, Ashley Diener, participated in the 11-mile kayak race for the second year in a row. Having come in third place for the sit-on-top kayaks in 2011, Diener was determined to do even better this year. The determination paid off as Diener came in first place for the sit-on-top kayaks at Saturday's race. He completed the 11-mile course in just over 3-hours.

The cause is personal for Diener as he lost his only sister, Brenda, 50, to lung cancer in March 2011. Diener recalls, "When my sister found out she had lung cancer, she knew what her chances were, but she didn`t stay home and become despondent. She was determined to fight the illness and we all fought through it with her. The whole family shaved our heads in solidarity. Although the Kayak Against Cancer race was long and grueling, it was nothing compared to what my sister went through. I am proud to be a supporter of such a noble cause and to help find a cure for such a terrible disease."
