Company Staff Make Up Crew for De Lage Landen Clipper in Round the World Race
Unique Crew in Top 3 as Race Enters Final Leg from New York to England
WAYNE, Pa., May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- With 37,000 nautical miles of a unique corporate adventure under their belts, the corporate staff of De Lage Landen, a global provider of asset-based financial products, is about to set off on the final New York to Southampton, England leg of the Clipper Round the World Race. DLL staff members from U.S. headquarters in Wayne, and from offices in Duluth, Ga., and Des Moines, Iowa, will be in New York on the June 7 sailing date to honor the crew and cheer as they head across the Atlantic. The unique corporate adventure connects nearly 5,400 staff members worldwide.
The DLL crew includes American Heather Stephens, a sales development representative from Duluth, GA.
Not only is DLL the first corporation to enter the Clipper Round the World Race, it is also unique in having its own employees on board. DLL wanted to do something different and provide a team-building exercise for the worldwide staff.
"We are proud of our crew's accomplishments throughout a race that has tested their endurance in the waters off many of the world's continents," said Bill Stephenson, chairman of the DLL Global Vendor Finance Division. "This experience is helping unify staff members in the 35 countries where DLL operates, especially the offices of those selected for the crew."
Of the more than 160 DLL staff members who applied as crew, eight are making the journey after passing the rigors of boot camp and intensive training. They are from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Highlights of the journey have included Team DLL's first place in the Singapore to China race, and their medical assistance earlier in the race to another clipper.
Stephens boarded the vessel at the start of Leg 7 to sail the 5,129-mile journey from San Francisco through the Panama Canal to New York.
"We hope that the way the race crew faces challenges as one team will provide an example for everyday practice. Through this journey, we aim to connect our DLL (staff) members across the world and to come together working toward one goal. In doing so, this makes us a better company, which ultimately makes us better at serving our customers," Stephens said before the race. She has been updating DLL staff members on her progress via the company intranet.
Individual DLL staff and offices have also used this opportunity to support conservation of fragile ocean ecosystems through a number of creative fund-raisers. Their efforts are benefiting the World Wildlife Fund's protection of the Coral Triangle, Stephenson noted.
