SUNDAY, AUGUST 12: CHRISTY MATHEWSON

Profile America — Sunday, August 12th.  One of major league baseball's best pitchers, Christy Mathewson, was born on this date in 1880.  In his 17-year career with the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds, he won 373 games, struck out more than 2,500 batters, and had a career earned run average of 2.13.  In the 1905 World Series, he pitched three shutouts in six days.  Mathewson was one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  He joined the Army during the first World War and was gassed in a training accident.  This led to tuberculosis, of which he died in 1925.  During Mathewson's active years, between 5 and 6 million people attended major league games.  Today, that number is 75 million.  Profile America is in its 16th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
